From time to time, the Building Host will organise events to help you get to know your neighbours and to invite friends and family along to – maybe a traditional Cornish cream tea in the garden, or a fishing trip followed by a barbecue on the terrace to share the day's catch.

Hosts
I felt that this job was something I could do and really give something to, and I could make difference.

Q&A with the hosts

Journalist Julie Tomlin had the chance to glimpse behind-the-scenes at Atlantic Rise and meet the new Hosts of Atlantic Rise, Rose and Sarah. They look after the day-to-day running of the place – no task is too great or small for these two. They tell Julie how their personal touch has made all the difference as the new neighbours get to know each other.

How did you find out about Atlantic Rise, and what drew you to the role of Host?

Rose

I’m born and bred in Bude. I lived in Warminster, worked in hotel management and 10 years ago I returned to Bude because all my family were here. A relation of mine was buying an apartment here. I went to visit her and she showed me the brochure and it mentioned that they were going to have hosts and I said: “Oh, I’ve always fancied doing that.” I felt that this job was something I could do and I could give something to and I could make a difference.

Sarah

My background is hospitality and cruise ships. Immediately prior to this I was in hospitality training, doing NVQ training, management, customer service, that kind of thing. I saw this job advertised and it really spoke to me, I really wanted to give it a go.

On the cruise ships it was all about the importance of customer service, doing whatever it takes as far as humanly possible, so there’s a lot that I can draw from that. You treat people the way you would like to be treated and how you would like your family to be treated. You’d like to think that someone else would go to as much effort and as many lengths as we do.

What inspires you day-to-day?

Rose

I’m a people person and I like to help people. I can help with any questions or queries about the area, anything that anyone wants to do. And what we don’t know, we can find out. It’s a job that encompasses everything we love about Cornwall and also our skills and backgrounds.

What’s your main priority at the moment?

Sarah

My background is hospitality and cruise ships. Immediately prior to this I was in hospitality training, doing NVQ training, management, customer service, that kind of thing. I saw this job advertised and it really spoke to me, I really wanted to give it a go.

How would you describe Bude to someone who has never visited before?

Sarah

It’s very much a community in the town, it’s not just a holiday destination. It’s a real melting pot of people from all walks of life and the Cornish are very accepting of that. We’ve found that everyone is very welcoming. It has a laid back, slightly quirky atmosphere, it’s not like a traditional retirement place at all. I like the geography of it, you have these two big beaches and the canal over the other side, there is so much to it, so many aspects to it. The views are unique. It’s a very friendly town and if you don’t know someone, you’re likely to know someone who knows them. Rose knows lots of people roundabout.

Rose

My family are all here and I know a lot of people here, because the connections are still here. There’s something for everybody in Bude and there’s room for everybody as well. There are great beaches, lovely walking, it’s a wonderful p lace to live and it’s got its own climate. There’s such a lot that goes on in Bude anyway, there’s a University of the Third Age, lots of clubs and groups, yoga and mobility classes.

What makes Atlantic Rise so special?

Rose

It really has a wow factor, it’s like coming into a hotel really. It’s as if you’re on holiday.

Sarah

When one man moved in, his neighbour took him shopping and said he would take him to the golf course. They remember what it was like when they moved in and perhaps didn’t know where things were, where they could get a pint of milk, or something. They are a bit of a team and they seem to feel they are in this together, there’s a sense of camaraderie.

It’s the small things that count, right? I’ve heard there’s a story behind these lovely keyrings…

Rose

Sarah’s husband is a superb artist and we had the idea of giving everybody a key ring when they moved in. These are driftwood from the beach around here. Robert has hand painted them and they’re all different, some are local landmarks, beach huts, fish, boats, Cornish flag. On the day people arrive, we invite them to choose a key ring and we then we take it away and put their keys on it, then wrap it up in a box and give it to them a few hours later. They are all absolutely delighted.
